On this page I will attempt through
time to give the locations and information about the many sources of
genealogical research material available in the north of England. However at the
present time the list is somewhat incomplete and I would be most grateful to
anyone who can supply me with information that is suitable for this page.
So far I have listed information about:-

County Records Offices
are a major source of genealogical research material, being the depository for
Parish Registers, Non-Conformist Registers, Census Returns and many other
records and registers. In most instances the original documents are not available to the researcher, but have been micro-filmed and are available on a
self-service basis in a "Search Room". Pre booking a micro-film reader
is essential and the researcher is able to purchase photocopies taken from the
micro-film.

The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, are to the forefront of genealogical research
and it is through their endeavour that the widely used International
Genealogical Index (IGI or Mormon Index) was produced and made available on
micro-fiche. The LDS Family History Centres have many research aids available in
book, micro-fiche, micro-film and CD-ROM format. They will also order in, on
payment of a modest fee, micro-filmed records from anywhere in the world. Pre
booking of a micro-film reader is essential.

Family
History Societies
Blank Line
The counties of northern
England are well served by three very active Family History Societies all of
which provide an excellent service to those of us wishing to research in the
area. The Cumbria FHS, covers the pre 1974 counties of Cumberland and
Westmorland. Likewise The Northumberland and Durham FHS provides a service for
the said counties. Then we have the Cleveland FHS, or to give it's full and more
descriptive name, The Cleveland, North Yorkshire and South Durham FHS.
Blank
Line
For a modest annual fee members of a society
receive a quarterly
journal and if living near enough, are able to attend monthly and in some
cases fortnightly meetings at
the several branches run by each society. Each
society, as an affiliated member of the Federation of Family History Societies
is able to offer for sale a vast array of research aids in the form of indices
of census returns, monumental inscriptions, parish registers, members interests.
These are available in book, micro-fiche and more recently CD-Rom format. Also
available are many guides giving information on where to search depending on
your ancestors trade or profession.
Blank
Line
Amongst the many ongoing
projects being carried out by the above FHS's are the National Burial Index
available on CD-ROM and the Internet based Civil Registration Index. It is
worthy to note here, that these projects are carried out by volunteers and that
funds raised by the sale of indices and other materials which are copyright,
allow the projects to continue and the FHS's to operate. Indiscriminate copying
and distribution of this material will only serve to reduce the amount of work
that can be carried out on the projects and in the long term FHS's will cease to
operate.
Blank
Line
Apart from the above
societies and many other county based societies throughout the country, there
are also a large number of FHS's based on trades and professions which are well
worth contacting if your ancestor was employed in that capacity.

Several museums
throughout the region offer a good insight into how our ancestors used to live,
work and play. Some concentrate on one form of employment, such as coal and lead
mining or the railways, whilst others give a broader view of life in days gone
by. Whatever the theme, all are well worth a visit.

Ashburton Roman Catholic Cemetery,
Gosforth, Northumberland
Blank

The Friends of Ashburton Cemetery are a small
group of volunteers, most of whom are retired and parishioners of St Charles
Roman Catholic Church, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne, England.
Blank
Line
Ashburton
Cemetery is located at the south end of Wolsingham Road, Gosforth and it
is the aim of the friends group to make it into a tranquil and special place for all who
visit and rest there. This is achieved by picking up litter, raking up grass
cuttings, keeping graves tidy and helping families to locate graves.
Blank
Line
This cemetery may be of
special interest for anyone looking for the last resting place of a family
member who became a Priest or Nun in the north-east of England. Having
looked at the burial register at St Charles RC Church, Gosforth, it appears that
Ashburton Cemetery may have been the main burial place for Parish Priests
and Nuns from the counties of Durham and Northumberland.

The Monumental Inscriptions
for Ashburton Cemetery were transcribed in 1995 by Kath Willans and the full
list of 469 can be viewed at http://www.cs.ncl.ac.uk/old/people/brian.randell/home.informal/Genealogy/genuki/Transcriptions/NBL/Ashburton.html
