Angus
Kindley plotty3941 (at)
waitrose.com Is
willing to carry out a specific search of a number of directories and
books he has in his possession, which relate to mining in the North
Pennine area.
1787 Vital Statistics Westmorland "Census" (which includes the mining villages
of Milburn, Long Marton & Dufton, and in a number of cases shows
miners and their families and is indexed for miners).
1811 Jollies Guide Cumberland
(only a page on Alston, so not so
helpful).
Parson & White Cumberland & Westmorland 1829
(plus index).
Mannix & Whellan 1847 Cumberland (plus index).
Alston 1851 Census.
Morris Harrison 1861 Cumberland Directory.
The
Lead Miners of the Northern Pennines by C.J. Hunt.
Two
Centuries of Industrial Welfare - The London (Quaker) Lead Company
1692-1905 by Arthur Rastrick.
A
History of Lead Mining in the Pennines by Arthur Rastrick
An
Account of the Mining District of Alston Moor, Weardale and Teesdale by Thomas Sopwith.
Alston
Moor - Its Pastoral People Its Mines and Miners by William Wallace.
The mining books are very interesting as they give not
only the history of the mines but just as importantly social conditions,
life expectancy, education, health, wage rates, etc., etc.

A BOOK TO READ
Blank Line
Hilary Stephens has read the book
“ENGLANDS
LAST WILDERNESS” by David
Bellamy and
says that several lead mining families are mentioned by name. The book is
available in libraries (Or at least Sunderland Central Library)
Blank Line
Another book recommended by Hilary Stephens, which may be
of use to people researching their ancestors in Allendale, but which may
be out of print now, is “AN ALLENDALE MISCELLANY”
by Hubert Dixon
published by Frank Graham of Newcastle in 1974. It is based on articles
written for the Hexham Courant in the 1960's, and also an earlier book “ALLENDALE
AND WHITFIELD” by George Dickinson last printed in 1903. It is not concerned with lead
mining as such but is interesting for the origin of place names.

DIARIES OF WILLIAM BREWIS OF MITFORD
1833-1850
Blank
Line
George Westgarth has recommended a book by Wagtail Press, 'The Diaries of
William Brewis of Mitford 1833-1850'. Price £9-99. It describes in detail not
only the farming and weather conditions of those years but the local history of
that area of Northumberland and wider still the social conditions and
governmental politics. George regards the book as a must for those interested in
the local history of our area and the fact that it is sprinkled with many names
makes it a gift for those of us delving into our family history.
