We have managed to trace our ancestors back to Robert DRYDEN, a
flax dresser, b.1786, Berwick upon Tweed and his wife Isabella who was born
1782. We have found them living in Berwick on the 1841 census with their
daughter Margaret who was born in Scotland in 1811. Their son Henry
(1809-1880) is our direct ancestor and we are keen to trace a record of his
birth and to find out more about his parents Robert and Isabella whose marriage
we have not been able to find despite a visit to the Berwick upon Tweed records
office. We believe they were Scottish Presbyterians and we have found a record
of a marriage in Kelso between a Robert DRYDEN son of George DRYDEN and Isabel HOPE in
1803 (though as George is not a name which features in subsequent
generations we have our doubts this is the correct one). Having broken
though to the eighteenth century we are very keen to get further back. However
we seem to have hit a brick wall. Any help would be much appreciated. (Submitted

I'm trying to establish a link between my SIZER ancestors who arrived in Virginia,
USA, in 1702 and our English
forebears. I'm a member of the New England Historical Genealogical Society
here in Boston, but despite their wealth of information, every time I try
to get past Virginia and into the UK, I hit a blank wall. I'm beginning to
wonder if perhaps we're descended from serfs at Sizergh Castle, who adopted
the place name when they were freed, much as did the slaves on our
"farm" in Virginia at the end of the Civil War. I would be
grateful for any information on SIZER's or on the history of the area from
±700 AD to ±1600? [I understand that the SIZERGH land and whatever
structure[s] might have been on it, was originally the gift of Henry II to
a DEINCOURT — but what about the Vikings who may have settled the area to
begin with?] (Submitted June 2007)

My family the ASSELBROUGH's originated in Heworth, DUR, but George and his
brother Peter moved west to Alston, CUL, after their parents died. George
married Elizabeth STOKER in 1778 in Alston. After Elizabeth's death he married
Isabella LOWE, in 1816. Peter went further west to Workington, CUL, where at the
age of 44 he married Susannah BARTON. The surname changed to HAZELBOROUGH /
HAZELBROUGH.
The ASSELBROUGH's who remained in Heworth were Nicholas and his sister Sarah.
Nicholas was killed in the 2nd Felling pit disaster in 1813. His son Christopher

Trying to find the parents of Elizabeth STEPHENSON who was born (according to a
descendant) in Dec 1836, Newcastle, NBL. I've not been able to reliably identify
her on the 1841 or 1851 censuses. Elizabeth came to Australia around 1853 and
married here in 1856 - just before the start of our civil registration, so there
is only a parish register entry for the marriage. Her death certificate lists no
name for her father but the informant has guessed her mother's name to be
"Elizabeth Stephens".
I believe she may well be a descendant, possibly great grandchild of William
STEPHENSON and Mary SISTERSON as the combinations of names Elizabeth gave
her children also appear among other known descendants of William and Mary.
Further, Elizabeth was left a sum of money in 1871 by Mary BELL nee STEPHENSON
(herself a granddaughter of William STEPHENSON and Mary SISTERSON).
Unfortunately in Mary's will she did not state what relation Elizabeth was to
her. Does Elizabeth appear in (or disappear from) your tree? If so please

I am trying to find information on John Harper ROBINSON, bapt 8 May 1814, Saint
Peter's, Huddersfield, WRY, one of at least 5 children born to Isaac ROBINSON
& Elizabeth HAMERTON. John was a lead mine agent & owner in Teesdale,
DUR & on 1881 census lived at 232 Westgate Rd, Newcastle, NBL, but by 1891
was living in Barnard Castle, DUR and died there in 1901 at 5 South View
Terrace. I already have a copy of the Durham & Northumberland Mineral
Statistics but wondered if anyone has any further family history or any ideas
for further research. (Submitted

I am studying for an MSc in Architectural Conservation and as part of the course
I have to record and research a historic building. I am concentrating on the
outbuildings next to Kings Head, Nenthead, CUL, but am using Kings Head as a
means for discovering what the building was used for. The pub/inn lost its
licence
around 1850 – just before that it had been managed by a Mr Thomas HARDY, whom
I have discovered a little more about through census records. The odd thing is
that he is recorded as being a ‘Labourer Road(s)’ not a pub landlord. I also
have record of a Peter SWINDLE as living at Kings Head in 1899, described in a
Trade’s Directory as a farmer. If anyone can help shed some light on either of
these people, or fill the gaps for who lived at the house in between the dates
it would be much appreciated. (Submitted
