Working on the female lines who married into the well-documented LONGSTAFF's of Weardale (Stanhope and St Johns Chapel) and Teesdale (Romaldkirk), DUR. I descend from Ralph LONGSTAFF (1825-1923) who left Stanhope for Australia and left a large family in Victoria. He was the son of John LONGSTAFF and Phoebe VICKERS, who was, in turn, the daughter of John VICKERS and Sarah WATSON. I have not been able to definitely trace either of those lines. Other surnames of those who married the LONGSTAFF's are:  POTTS, HORN, WALL, and LAW. (Submitted February 2007)

I have been tracing my family for some 20 years and the origins of my surname hark back to Alston, Garrigill, CUL, Allendale, Ninebanks, NBL. The name is KEENLEYSIDE (and all it's variations - KEENLYSIDE, KEENLISIDE, KINLESIDE, KENLISIDES, KINLEYSIDE, KYNLYSIDE, KINDLEYSIDE). A short history of my connection to the name is from a Robert KINLESIDE of Alston Moor, CUL marrying Elizabeth HAGGERSTONE also of Alston Moor at Penrith, CUL, 17 May 1687. That led to the family living in the mining area around Long Marton, Dufton and Knock, all WES, and the name gradually changing from KEENLEYSIDES to KINDLEYSIDES and thence my name KINDLEY.

I would be willing to do a short search for information relating to Lead Mining from these books.

My ancestor, William BLAYLOCK was born in Dalston, CUL, in 1829 and later moved to St. Helens, LAN. He was the illegitimate son of Mary BLAYLOCK daughter of William BLAYLOCK born 1783 in Raughton, CUL and Jane PARKER. William (1783) also had a father William BLAYLOCK born 1733 in Brackenhill, CUL, who married Mary BARNES in Castle Sowerby, CUL.  Then I am stuck and would love to hear from anyone with BLAYLOCK links. Why William (1829) would leave such a beautiful place as Cumberland to move to Liverpool and St Helens I would love to know? (Entered October 2002)

I am looking for information on WITHEROP, WITHERUP, WITHRUP, WOTHERUPPE, or any variation. The name seems to originate from the Co. Durham area - 1500's to 1900. WITHERUP was my great-grandmother's maiden name. I have got back to William WITHERUP born around 1817 either in Co. Durham or after his father moved to Ireland from the Durham area - who may have come from the Fishburn district. Any information would be appreciated. Are there any WITHEROP, WITHERUP etc descendants still in the area?  (Updated July 2002)

I am seeking information on the following families, COATES, DAWSON, ELGEY, HARRIS, RICHARDSON, (Willington, DUR, 19thC). John COATES m. Eleanor RICHARDSON, 1862 at St. Stephens, Willington and their son Joseph COATES, b 1867, Brancepeth, emigrated to USA, abt 1884, where in 1891 he married Mary Ann HARRIS in Centerville, Iowa. Mary Ann, b 1873, Littletown, DUR, was the dau of William HARRIS & Celia JENKIN(S), who married 1869, Easington Reg Dist, DUR. The HARRIS family emigrated to U.S. around 1884. The father of John COATES is thought to be Robert and the father of Eleanor RICHARDSON is thought to be William RICHARDSON, b abt 1819, Brampton, CUL, but neither of these have been confirmed.
I believe that Joseph COATES had two sisters, Mary Ellen (Nellie) and Jane Ann (Jennie), b 1875, Willington. Nellie married Robert DAWSON, and Jennie may have married an ELGEY.  I have lots of pictures of ELGEY's (Ethel, George, John, Alfred), but no clear connection. Ida DAWSON and Ethel ELGEY corresponded with my Grandmother, Eveline HOSKINS in Iowa.
I recently found a Bible entry that lists under Family Register:-
James Harry HARRIS, 7 July 1869.
Mary Ann HARRIS, 28 February 1871.
Mary Ann HARRIS, September 1872.
Under Deaths:-
James Harry HARRIS, 11 November 1869.
Mary Ann HARRIS, September 1871.
William HARRIS, 3 June 1895 (This would have been in USA).
I believe these to be the children of William HARRIS & Celia JENKIN(S).
Would be happy to hear from anyone with information on these families. (Submitted March 2007)
