I seek info on George McLEAN (born c1809) and his family. I assume they
lived in Dumbarton, DNB, Scotland in 1858 and then moved to the Byker area of
Newcastle, NBL, c1861. He was either a ships carpenter or a joiner. By 1863 the
family was back in Dumbarton, when a son died. George's wife Jane WEBSTER
died 1866 in Dumbarton Poorhouse. I have yet to find George's burial but it is
possible that this was between 1867 & 1871. He was a journeyman so I take it
that means he traveled around? I would welcome any advice or information on the
above and also photograph or details of the location of Long Row, Byker. (Submitted June 2005)

He was married to Rebecca LATTIMORE, 1747, Haltwhistle, NBL, they
eventually lived at Blanchland,

son Edward WHITFIELD married Hannah TATTERS (Alston, CUL, late 18thC). They moved to Heworth, near Gateshead, DUR, about
1800 and had children called Isabella, William and Matthew. Other names of
interest are; Jane Eleanor CARR,
Matthew MADDISON, Judith WILKINSON, Ann JOBLING
Joseph CARDWELL, Sarah PEARSON,

the U.S.A, starting a new life and family there and finally settling in California. I am also trying to
find out about Leonard WHITFIELD ( Tyneside, late 19th to
early 20thC). He was rumoured to have been killed in the 1st

I am writing a book about my family and the War years and tracing connections
back to the COLLINGWOOD family in Northumberland. There is a wealth of
information available with such a famous name but at the moment I am unable to
make the connection, due largely to the fact it is before the 1861 Census.
Blank
Line
In my childhood I was told that after the disaster of George COLLINGWOOD
of Eslington, NBL supporting the Stuart Restoration and he being hung in 1715,
together with the confiscation of the lands and properties by the King, a COLLINGWOOD descendant left Northumberland moving to Durham City.
I have now established that on 11 Sep 1792, Henry COLLINGWOOD, born
Eglingham,
NBL, married Dorothy WILKINSON, born Durham City, DUR.
Henry's Great Grandfather also Henry, was the youngest of 6 boys born
in the 1500's to Sir Cuthbert COLLINGWOOD and Dorothy BOWES and lived at
Eslington in NBL. Henry's eldest brother of the 6 boys was Cuthbert II and he
was the direct ancestor of Admiral Lord Cuthbert COLLINGWOOD, our common
ancestor being Robert de COLLINWOOD, born circa 1220, NBL.

My quest now is to find the children of Henry COLLINGWOOD & Dorothy WILKINSON
(his 2nd wife, married 1792). Going backwards from my line by Birth
Certificates, I am back to Thomas COLLINGWOOD and Margaret RIDLEY,
who married about 1833, my 2 x Gt. Grandparents. I would be grateful to anyone
who can find a link between Henry & Dorothy and Thomas & Margaret. (Updated

Researching ABBOTT, ALLON, HYMERS
(Newcastle, NBL, Gateshead, DUR, 17-19thC). William HYMERS (2) was my 4 X Gt. Uncle and
was a Mayor of Gateshead in 1840. I found his political papers in Gateshead
Library. William's brother James also ran for office. They were Iron
Founders and had a close association with John Abbott & Co, renting his own
foundary from them at The Park Works in Whickham, DUR. William's son was James
Abbott HYMERS who co-owned Whickham House and had a stained glass
window dedicated to his late wife in Whickham Church in 1865. William and
James were the sons of William HYMERS (1) who was buried in 1806 in

I have made it my personal pursuit to dig deep. When William (1) died he is

How did he leap from what was virtual poverty to what must have been the then
equivalent of a millionaire William HYMERS married Jane ABBOTT in

The William DAVIDSON, b1804, referred to on the 'Northerners Abroad' page
of this web site, is a distant cousin related to my late grandmother Elsie DAVIDSON,
she was the grand daughter of Charles DAVIDSON, b1804, Banff Scotland. He was
convicted of stealing in Aberdeen in 1836 and was transported to Tasmania,
Australia, arriving 12 Nov 1836 and being appropriated to a farm at Campbelltown,
Tasmania. William DAVIDSON had already settled and married in Tasmania a few
years earlier but died in 1837. Charles married 23 Feb 1859, Brighton, near
Hobart, Tasmania and his children established the link between the two families
but today's families do not know where the link is. For as long as I can
remember both families enjoyed each others company and said they were cousins.

Scotland and Barbara FORBES, b 1770, Rathven, Scotland. It seems that this
info is correct but not confirmed, but as for William's parentage the only
possible link I can find is a William DAVIDSON, b1804, to an Alexander DAVIDSON
& Katherine FORBES, at Perth, Scotland. I would like to try and find the

& Charles, b1770, could have been brothers, or the mothers Barbara &
Katherine FORBES be sisters. any help would be greatly appreciated. (Submitted

A fellow researcher, Alan Swindale, and I are seeking documented evidence of a
link between all variants of the names SWINDALE, SWINDELL, SWINDLE etc
with places of similar name. So far no evidence whatsoever has been found of a
locative link between several Swindale locations in the north of England and
variations of the SWINDALE name. We have also failed to find any definite
Swindale location in Cheshire or Derbyshire which can explain the
high density of the surname variants found in those counties. Any information
showing a documented link, rather than just family lore and tradition, between a

I am researching the name CORWIN/CORWINE
in the area of Long Island, New York where the immigrant Matthias CORWIN
landed in the 1630's. On a Suffolk Co., NY, muster roll dated 1762, is one
William ORWINE who is listed as age 19 [so born abt. 1743]; his
occupation is "miner" and it is stated that he was born in Ireland.
Blank
Line
For at least a hundred years CORWIN genealogists in the U.S. have assumed
that this William on the muster roll was one William CORWIN born 1744, a
known descendant (2 x Gt. Grandson) of the immigrant Matthias CORWIN.
However, the recent find by a Suffolk Co., NY historian, of this muster roll
which lists age and country of birth, makes it impossible for the William ORWINE
on the muster roll to be the William CORWIN everyone had always supposed
him to be.
Blank
Line
Some on-line searching reveals that the surname ORWINE is very rare
indeed. In fact, I have encountered it only once in any trustworthy on-line
record: the 1851 Nenthead census. Since Nenthead is in a mining area and since
this William ORWINE of the old muster roll was a miner, I'm wondering if
he could have had some connection to Nenthead.
Blank
Line
Does anyone have any info on this surname? Could it be a bastardization of CORWINE.
Any particle of information would be most appreciated as I am helping a CORWIN
researcher who is soon to be publishing a book on updated CORWIN
genealogy and I would like to help him prevent possible errors. (Submitted

Researching ARMSTRONG, WALTON (Alston, CUL, 19-20thC). WHARTON (Norham, NBL, 19thC). My maternal grandmother was Elizabeth Ann
ARMSTRONG, b 1908.
Her parents were John Walton ARMSTRONG born 1864, Alston and Margaret WHARTON
of Norham, NBL. John's mother was Ann WALTON, but I'm not sure which one. She
was married to (I assume) an ARMSTRONG but I don't know which as he is
not at home on census nights from 1851 onwards. He appears to have died sometime
between 1871 and 1881 when Ann is recorded as a lead miner's widow. (Submitted October 2005)

Also seeking information on the ancestors of Robert HOPE & Mary Ann SCOTT,
who married 18 Sept 1825, Newcastle, All Saints, NBL. Mary Ann born 1800, was
the daughter of Thomas SCOTT & Elizabeth MAXWELL whose other
children were Elizabeth 1802, Thomas 1904 & George 1806. I am still looking
for parents of Robert HOPE and have two possibilities:- (1) born 11 Oct
1807, Tynemouth, NBL, son of Robert Hope & Jane WILSON. (2) bapt 25
Dec 1803, son of William HOPE & Jane SUMMERSIDES. I also found
baptism of John Thomas HOPE, 15 Oct 1828, Tynemouth, son of Robert HOPE
& Mary, no maiden name given, but thought it could be second child of Robert
HOPE & Mary Ann SCOTT, who married 1825, as 'John Thomas' has
been carried on through 3 succeeding generations of the HOPE family. Any
information would be gratefully received. (Submitted October 2005)

(Newcastle, NBL, 19thC) Trying for months to find my 3 x Gt. Grandfather.
My 2 x Gt. Grandfather was Robert BOAK born 1828/9 Rothbury, NBL. He
married Elizabeth MITCHINSON at St Peter's Church, Newcastle, NBL, in
1851 and on his marriage certificate his father is shown as Robert BOAK,
occupation farmer. I am now wondering if this was a fabrication and that
Robert was actually the illegitimate son of either Mary or Jessie BOAK,
daughters of William BOAK born 1757, Lazonby, CUL and Barbara DONKIN,
born 1771, Rothbury, NBL. (Submitted November 2005)
