I am researching my family history and have come across a Mark WELLS, born Cowes, Isle of Wight, HAM, who we believe is my husbands 2x Gt. Grandfather. He is listed on the 1861 census as being a mariner, living in Hartlepool, DUR, with his wife Mary Ann MEAD and 2 children. In 1871 his wife Mary Ann (shown as married) is head of the family and has 4 children and her mother living with her. Is it possible to find out if he was at sea and what ship he was on, if so how do I go about searching? Mary Ann died in 1879 and in 1880 Mark married widow Helen SCOTT (possibly nee MORRISON) who was born Scotland. In 1881 Mark & Helen are living in Hartlepool with 3 of his children & 2 from Helen's previous marriage, at this time Mark is a labourer. By 1891, Mark WELLS is still married to Helen but has returned to life as a mariner. (Submitted March 2007)

Their son, also John YOUNG, was born 1844, Rothbury, NBL and he married Isabella FAIL, born 1851, Longhorsley, NBL, but the only marriage I have found was in 1872 and it states that he was a joiner, all other information states that he was a carter. John & Isabella had 5 children, Dorothy, Mary Elizabeth, Hannah, Thomas and John Henry who died 30 Sep 1890 aged 4 months, the burial being certified under the Burial Law of 1880, by his father John YOUNG. It seems my 2 x Gt. Grandfather was involved with the Presbyterian Church.
