Researching for Americans whose families originated in Cumbria or Northumberland and then moved to Ulster. I co-operate with researchers based in the Borders and encourage Genealogy Tourists to visit Ulster & the  Borders. Genealogy links between the Borders and Ulster have been strong for centuries - many Ulster folk trace their  family origins to the Debatable Lands along the English - Scottish Border. The names in Ulster which originated in this area are well-documented- BELL, CROZIER, KERR, JOHNSON, STOREY, ARMSTRONG, MAXWELL, RUTLEDGE, GRAHAM, MAHARG, (Graham spelt  backwards) etc etc. These Border folk settled in the most inhospitable areas of Ireland yet they prospered.

It is believed that John HOODSPITH and Mary PURVIS who married 4 Mar 1803, Ponteland, NBL, were my 2 x Gt. Grandparents, they had 4 children, William, Robert, Sarah and John. Does anyone have any information about these people? John HOODSPITH Jnr, married Martha CHAPMAN, 7 Sept 1842, children were Avis Eliza, Robert, William, Manship and Martha. Recently I found an entries for two Edward HOODSPITH who died 1692 & 1693, Alnwick, NBL  and I have found another Edward born 1693 in Alnwick.

Also seeking information on Henry William (born 1874, Kensington) and Robert Charles (born 1876, Kensington) HOODSPITH. Possibility that they both emigrated from England.

Researching WHITEHEAD (and possibly STANSFIELD), (Croydon, SRY, Portsmouth, HAM, Triangle, WRY, West Norwood, 19-20thC). Unfortunately, my great grandfather, Jonathan WHITEHEAD had died months before the 1901 census. I believe Jonathan STANSFIELD (possibly born 1848 at Otley, WRY) was orphaned and brought up by a family called WHITEHEAD, taking this name.   His wife was Mary E. MANN (born London 1861), and they had 7 children:  Frances, Jessie, Mary (my grandmother), Jonathan, Alice, William, James and May Riley, all born between 1886-1900. The children were born in Triangle, West Norwood, Croydon, Portsmouth, Portsmouth, Portsmouth, and Triangle, respectively. Jonathan WHITEHEAD was at various times a masseur, hydropathic bathman and labourer, but this curious southward trip, with almost ten years in Portsmouth, followed by a return to Triangle, near Halifax, WRY, remains a puzzle.

Looking for relatives connected to family of John BELL (Lead Miners Agent, Patterdale, WES, b. Alston, CUL) and wife Hannah's father
William COUSIN. There are two John BELL's in Alston of the right age. The parents of my John BELL could be either (1) William BELL & Ann HUTCHINSON  or (2) Thomas BELL and Mary CRAIG. I have been advised that the second John BELL married Ann HUART at St Augustine's, Alston, 5 Sep 1829. Also been informed that his parents were Thomas & Mary but have no proof of this. If it is true my ancestors are more likely to be William & Ann. I'm keen to prove or disprove this. Accordingly, I would appreciate any information concerning William BELL & Ann HUTCHINSON or Thomas BELL & Mary CRAIG of Alston area, including any ancestry or descendants for them.

Wish to track connections to Robert ARMSTRONG, b 1816, who
whilst being baptised like his siblings at Arthuret, his family at some stage moved to a tenant farm called or at Willowholme, Carlisle. The squire of the property was Sir Philip Howard of Corby Castle, Great Corby, CUL, though I believe the farm was not at Corby but where Willowholme industrial estate is today. Robert was the youngest son and emigrated with his new wife in 1842, as stablehand on board the "Thomas Sparkes" to Wellington, New Zealand, where he became a saddler.

Robert's parents were Richard ARMSTRONG b Scotland abt 1776 & Isabella MURRAY nee SCOT, b Carlisle, abt 1776.  Their children were Mary b1806, twins? John & William b abt 1808, James b abt 1810, Isabella b abt 1812, Jane b abt 1814 and Robert abt 1816. I have never been able to locate any ancestors of this family apart from Robert's. Accordingly I'm keen to trace both ancestors and descendants of Richard ARMSTRONG and Isabella SCOT. (Updated April 2007)

Researching CLARK, HALL, HARRISON, LITTLE, VICKERS (Stanhope, Pease Myers, Belle Vue, Eastgate, Westgate, St John's Chapel, DUR, 18-19thC) Looking for information on my ancestors from Stanhope, DUR, the HARRISON and VICKERS families. My Gt. Grandfather was Henry (1) HARRISON, born 1845, married to Lydia CLARK. Their children were - Henry (2) b.1871, he was a postman in Stanhope, Fred born 1874, (he went to Durham Choristers school), Meggie born 1877, Agnes born 1878 and Rhoda born 1880, all spinsters, George born 1883 (see below). I think Henry (1)'s father may have been Michael born 1788 and he may have married twice. On my VICKERS side I can trace my direct line back to Joseph born 17??, married Margaret LITTLE in 1743. His parents may have been James VICKERS & Esther HALL, but I have two Joseph's born and married at roughly the same time and so far I have not been able to identify them separately. My VICKERS family were farmers, particularly at Pease Myers and Belle Vue, but also in Eastgate, and various siblings were in Westgate & St. John's Chapel and one went to Australia (Joseph b.1826 died in Australia 1888). Most of the VICKERS ancestors seem to have had large families and were connected by marriage to many other well-known Weardale families.

I have for some time been trying to identify two names on the WW1 War Memorial in Eastgate churchyard. They are simply shown as VICKERS. F, 1914-1918 and VICKERS. G, 1914-1918. I have searched various sites for details of War dead, but as I have no idea of Regiments there's little to go on. My VICKERS family were mainly in Stanhope but were spread further up the Dale. If anyone has any suggestions as to how I may be able to trace these Inscriptions & so turn another page in the Family Tree I'd be very grateful. (Updated June 2007)

VICKERS (Staindrop, DUR, 19-20thC). I am still seeking information on the parents, siblings and children of Thomas William VICKERS born Staindrop, DUR, about 1853. He married Helen (also known as Helena, Annie or Nellie) NEVISON (who was baptized 9th March 1853, Darlington, DUR). Thomas William was a shopkeeper, of one sort or another in 1881 and 1891, ending up on the 1901 census as a Wine & Spirits merchant. (Vickers & Hanson) in Staindrop. Thomas & Helena had eight children in all.
both' being of full age' and both born Staindrop, DUR. I have doubts that Mary was 21 because in all the subsequent census she shows as being a few years younger. Their known children, so far being Margeret b. 1841 Thomas William b.1842, John  George b.1844 , Joseph and Chester (or Charles).

I am searching for information on the children of William FINDLAY and any of his three wives. Nothing is known of his first marriage or children, but his second marriage was to Rachel Mary GOODRUM, in 1873, Woolwich, KEN. This marriage resulted in at least 6 children all born around the Middlesbrough & South Stockton (Thornaby), NRY area. They were William John, b 1874, Janet Woodhouse, b 1875, d 1876, Alfred, b 1876, (married Sarah Ann FAWCETT), Susan, b 1880, died 1884, Female child b 1881, George Ernest, b 1883 (married Elizabeth SOUTHALL).

Second wife Rachel Mary died in 1891 and William, a blacksmith, married again the following year to Elizabeth Ann (Lillian) ANGUS, age 21, in South Stockton
, dau of James Robson ANGUS & Elizabeth DIXON.

William and Elizabeth had one known daughter Elizabeth Gertrude (Gertie) FINDLAY, born 1893, Stockton, who married James W BULLOCK in Stockton in 1912. Any information on this family most welcome. Another child James Ernest FINDLAY born 1898, Thornaby but there is no father named on the birth certificate.

There may have been other children but I have no information on them. I do not know when William FINDLAY died but in 1900 Elizabeth Ann (Lillian) FINDLAY, nee ANGUS married Tom SANDERSON from Thornaby on Tees. She claims to have been a widow at the time of this second marriage. James Ernest FINDLAY was about 18 months old at the time of his mothers second marriage and grew up with the surname of SANDERSON. James Ernest FINDLAY/SANDERSON was my father and any information on the FINDLAY side of the family would be most welcome as I know almost nothing about them. (Updated October 2007)

I am currently researching the HARRISON family from Ryton and Crawcrook, DUR. In particular Joseph HARRISON and his son John Brunskill HARRISON, who married Ann Helena CURRY. They were miners in and around this area in the late 1800's and early 1900's before John's move to Darlington, DUR, in 1931. If anyone could give me any info on these people it would be lovely. Thank you. (Submitted April 2004)

My 2 x Great Grandfather, Robert MODDISON, was born in Upper Canada in 1823, to English parents. Sadly, that's about all I know for sure. He was orphaned and raised by John and Jane MODELAND of Peel County, Ontario. The MODELAND family came from Northern England in 1822 and the remainder of the family followed by 1828.  They were miners and are said to have come from Garrigill, CUL. Both the MODELAND's and MODDISON's were Wesleyan Methodists. My theory (a huge stretch) is that the two families knew one another and that they immigrated together.  I have found one record for a Joseph MODDISON married in Hexham, NBL in 1840, but he's not the one I'm looking for.  MODDISON is obviously very similar to MORRISON, but I have found evidence of MODDISON, MODISON and MODSON in various parts of England. If anyone sees the name MODDISON, or something similar, in your "dig" I'd be very grateful if you could let me know.

Robert MODDISON's future wife Mary MARTIN and her father Henry MARTIN immigrated from Lambley, NBL, during the 1830's.  As Lambley is so close to Alston & Garrigill, I wondered if there might be a connection there with the MODELAND family. John MODELAND Jnr's wife Elizabeth MOOR was the sister of Henry MARTIN's late wife Mary MOOR. The MOOR sisters were the children of John MOOR & Jane HUTTON. (Updated October 2005)

The names I am interested in are GRAHAM, HODGSON and THOMPSON. My 2 x Gt. Grandfather Featherstone HODGSON was bapt 1789, St Johns Chapel, Weardale, DUR.  His second wife was Elizabeth PEART (nee GRAHAM), who married at Heatherycleugh, DUR, in 1834.  She was a widow whose 1st husband was Joseph PEART.  She is the Elizabeth HODGSON mentioned in the letters held in the Durham Archives sent from the US to the GRAHAM family. His name was Featherstone Hodgson and he had a son of that name.  I believe one of the
family emigrated to the USA, i.e. Featherstone junior. My grandmother was Susanna THOMPSON. Her brothers settled around Consett, DUR during the 1870's and 1880's. Their father was Cuthbert Emerson THOMPSON. Born 1819 at Whitestones. He was the natural son of Joseph PEART and Mary THOMPSON. He was my great grandfather. The name of the brothers were Thomas, Isaac and Joseph Emmerson THOMPSON. Joseph was killed on the wagon way at Medomsley, DUR in 1902 aged 62.

I would like to contact anyone who is descended from William HODGSON and his wife Margaret MASON. They were on the 1841 Census at Shieldhall near Consett, DUR and by 1861 William was a 'Beerhouse keeper' in Medomsley Road, Consett. I would also like to hear from any descendants of  Robert HODGSON and his wife Isobel CLENNELL, who were married 1849, Hunstanworth, Derwentside, DUR. Also Mary HODGSON, who married Jonathan BEESTON, 1836, St John's Chapel, Weardale, DUR. Finally, Brown HODGSON, who died 1849, aged 24, at Medomsley.
